What is Data Entry Job?

May 18, 2020 // by Amit Kumar

Data entry is not a new concept. People have been working in this field since the emergence of computer. With time, more and more organizations needed people to work as data entry operators.

Also, companies are outsourcing the data entry work, which is proof of the development in the gig economy. Keylogging is another name of the data entry. Many organizations deal with a large amount of data, and for this purpose, they need people to make entries in the system.

Before you become part of this field, you need to know what to expect. If you prefer to work remotely, do not expect high pay rate, and pay raise even after spending some time with the company.

Data entry is not similar to data mining. You won’t be dealing with the data that individuals discuss when they complain regarding Facebook privacy policies.

Data entry jobs are not complicated; you need to fill data in the tables in excel sheet or word document. The employers provide the format, and you have to fill the data available to you in the given spaces.

Data Entry is an abstract term that includes several occupations. The common jobs that are part of this profession are electronic data processing, typing, word processing, transcription, coding, and clerical work. These jobs may not necessarily be office-based jobs.

Instead, you can do this job remotely. It would help if you had a decent PC/laptop, and an internet connection to connect to your employer via email or Skype.

Data entry jobs in the office are quite different from the home-based ones. In-office environment, you have to follow a fixed schedule, while in home-based data entry work, you can decide as to how many hours you need to work. So, there is more flexibility if you opt to work remotely as a data entry operator.

Irrespective of home-based or office-based data entry position, the selection criteria is not difficult to meet. Also, the training process is not strict.

People having good typing skills alongside English reading and writing skills with high school qualification can easily qualify for this job. If you are a student, you can work part-time as a data entry operator to earn some cash.

In effect, data entry refers to operating equipment (usually a keyboard) to insert alphabetical, symbolic, and numerical information/data into the system of a company. The Opencart data entry (more about perfectdataentry.com) entry operator also must verify or amend data when it is entered. The data could be in hand-written forms or audio files.

Although the job itself is not complicated, the operators need to carefully enter the data so that the values are at their right place. To ensure perfection, operators need to double-check what they entered. In the data entry field, the trend of home-based or online work is on the rise.

The data entry operators who work for micro-labour offices that employ crowdsourcing methods might perform small tasks for nominal fees. This model is becoming more popular.

The conventional data entry organizations have employed workers who enter a large amount of data for them. These organizations are business process outsourcing companies. They pay their workers per hourly, per word basis or after the completion of the entire project.

Nature of the Jobs

Several data entry positions discussed above relate to the abstract term "Data Entry." Some organizations advertise the vacancies as data entry positions (unlike transcription jobs), these jobs are pretty straightforward and do not require special skills, and are also not highly paid.

Importantly, if your typing speed is fast, you will be able to enter more data in less time. Subsequently, you may end up earning a reasonable amount.

The data entry job may use the method of hourly wages (not common in online data work); keystrokes an hour; or keystroke-per-minute. Likewise, companies also use the technique of per-audio-minute or per word.

All these methods will benefit you if your speed of entering data is really fast. Practice will enable you to type fast.

Even the general transcription jobs have various types; some employers may ask for more experience and speed than general data entry position. Additionally, these types of jobs may require special equipment and not just the PC.

In some transcription jobs, first, you have to listen to an audio and then transcribe it. For example, the conversation between a doctor and a patient or the conversation between insurance officer and the client.

Technology has brought so much convenience even in job patterns. Now, people can do the data entry job from their home. However, several organizations only allow those individuals who have received in-house training to work remotely.

Remember, several independent contractors also hire people, and these contractors do not follow minimum wage rules. They are the competitors in the global market. So, if you work for them, the wage rate may be lower. Furthermore, you may not receive bonuses or any perks for efficient working.

In the beginning, to gain experience, you can work for such contractors for a month or two, but do not think to work for such employers in the long-run. When you gain some experience, switch to better opportunities.

Beware of Online Scams

Although the online world has brought a revolution in the lives of people, scams are also a harsh reality. Several online home-based data entry jobs are a scam. The scammers promise high pay to trap people; they get the work done and do not pay.

Therefore, be extra careful while working online for people. First, verify the details of the employer, and then provide your relevant information.

Final Word

Data Entry jobs do not require special skills. Mostly in data entry jobs, you have to fill in the information in the given space. However, the umbrella of data entry jobs also includes transcription, word processing, coding and other clerical work.

These jobs are not ideal for ambitious people, but beneficial for students, and those who want some extra money apart from regular income. Data entry jobs require strong typing skills.
